Candace managed to pull me away from the house. “We should gather a bouquet of the autumn flowers and ask the earth to bless your love, so he returns safe to you.”

I gladly followed her to the fields. We spent the day collecting flowers, herbs, and roots Candace knew would bring forth success. As the sun dipped below the tree line, we made our way to her cottage. At her hearth we made the preparations. Candace knew of the prayers, songs and incantations that the old spirits listened to. And while we drank the tea she brewed, she hummed the tune to call forth the protection spirits we knew my love would require. After the spell was cast, we finished our tea and tossed the herbs to the fire. The fragrant smoke filled her cottage. Her grandmother laughed that we would be smoked out like bees. We sat and carded wool for her, the promise of warm mitts in the winter months that soon approached.
